Sydney Sweeney Poised to Return for The Housemaid’s Secret as Lionsgate Develops Sequel

Lionsgate is moving forward with The Housemaid’s Secret, the highly anticipated sequel to its box-office hit The Housemaid, and Sydney Sweeney is firmly at the center of the studio’s plans. The actress is expected to both star in and executive produce the follow-up, which is currently in development and based on the second novel in Freida McFadden’s bestselling Housemaid trilogy.

While no official acting deal has been finalized, sources indicate that Lionsgate is eager for Sweeney to reprise her role as Millie, the character that anchored the first film. Sweeney is already confirmed as an executive producer on the sequel, signaling a deeper creative involvement as the franchise expands.

Paul Feig, who directed the original film, is set to return behind the camera for The Housemaid’s Secret, maintaining continuity for the growing thriller franchise. The sequel adapts McFadden’s second book, which continues Millie’s story while shifting its narrative focus in unexpected ways.

Amanda Seyfried, who co-starred in The Housemaid, is also attached to the sequel as an executive producer. Although her character does not appear in McFadden’s second novel, the door remains open for her potential return in the film adaptation, according to sources familiar with the project.

The sequel is being produced by Hidden Pictures and Pretty Dangerous Pictures, following the strong commercial performance of The Housemaid. The film has earned approximately $75 million at the domestic box office and $133 million worldwide, with international rollouts continuing through January—numbers that helped fast-track development on the next installment.

Screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted the first film, will return to write the sequel. She joins producers Todd Lieberman, Paul Feig, Laura Fischer, Carly Elter, and Alex Young, with McFadden herself also serving as an executive producer to help shepherd her story to the screen.

In a statement, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson emphasized the audience demand driving the sequel. He pointed to both the film’s global box office success and the strong social media response as evidence that viewers are eager to see what happens next in Millie’s story. Fogelson also praised the creative team and expressed enthusiasm about bringing another chapter of McFadden’s wildly popular series to theaters.

Feig echoed those sentiments, noting that it has been “thrilling” to watch audiences connect with the film and the work of its cast and crew. He added that McFadden’s continuation of Millie’s journey in the novels provides a strong foundation for the sequel, and that he looks forward to collaborating again with Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring the next story to life.

The Housemaid’s Secret will be overseen at Lionsgate by Chelsea Kujawa, who also guided the first film through the studio, alongside Maria Ascanio. Robert Melnik is handling negotiations for Lionsgate.

With a proven box-office draw, a returning creative team, and a star increasingly involved behind the scenes, The Housemaid’s Secret is shaping up to be a major next chapter in Lionsgate’s expanding thriller franchise.
